Mary Catherine Bateson (born December 8, 1939 in New York City , † January 2, 2021 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an American cultural anthropologist .

Life

Mary Catherine Bateson was born on December 8, 1939 in New York to Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson .

Because of the separation of her parents in 1947 and their frequent absence, she grew up in different households with different families. The changeful experiences in her youth aroused her interest in anthropology and the preoccupation with the development of new educational methods.

Bateson married Barkev Kassarjian in 1960 and their daughter Sevanne Kassarjian was born in 1969 .

Act

Bateson's work covered a wide range of topics, including topics such as intercultural relationships, social and individual learning, women's life patterns, aging, family dynamics, AIDS, and the nature of knowledge. Systemic thinking , in particular a highly developed form of cybernetics , played a special role in her work . In her work a humanitarian way of thinking was also expressed, which combines a pronounced respect for the individual with an awareness of greater forces. She wrote of her life numerous articles and books over and held guest lectures at the Harvard University , the Northeastern University , the Amherst College and Spelman College .

In 2004, Bateson ended her teaching position as a professor of English and anthropology and was a visiting scholar at the Sloan Center on Aging & Work in Boston from 2006 . Among other things, she was a member of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado .

In 2010 her book Composing a Further Life: The Age of Active Wisdom was published. It deals with "contributions from adults to encourage older people to sharpen their senses". This book also explores intergenerational communication and the changes in the experience of time.

Bateson was president of the Institute for Intercultural Studies in New York for 30 years. She campaigned for the preservation of the works of her parents and their numerous colleagues. In 2011 Mary Catherine Bateson started a series of lectures at Boston College under the title Live across differences .
