Mary Karr (born January 16, 1955 in Groves , Texas ) is an American writer and poet.

Life

Mary Karr grew up in a small town in the Port Arthur region of Texas . After graduating from high school , she went to Los Angeles with a group of friends , where she lived within the hippie culture for a few months . After two years of study at Macalester College in St. Paul , Minnesota , Mary Karr met the Afro-American poet Etheridge Knight (1931–1991), who influenced her artistic development, as part of the anti- apartheid movement. She studied creative writing at Goddard College ( Vermont )and obtained a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1979. Tobias Wolff was her mentor . Other influences came from the poets Robert Bly and Robert Hass .

Since 1980 Mary Karr worked in Boston in various positions in the computer and telecommunications industry. During this time she wrote and published her poems. From 1983 until their divorce in 1991, Mary Karr was married to the poet Michael Milburn. There is a son from marriage. After various teaching positions at Tufts University , Emerson College , Harvard University and Sarah Lawrence College , Mary Karr is Professor of English Literature at Syracuse University in Boston. Here she also met David Foster Wallace .
