history

In 1886, Sam Courville and his family moved from a settlement on Sabine Lake in Port Arthur to an area of 2.5 km² (640 acres).

In the same area, John Warne Gates bought additional lots around 1911. In 1916 the land was transferred to the Griffing Brothers of Port Arthur, who three years later planted several thousand pecan trees in an area of 385 hectares under the supervision of Wiley Choate, an employee of the Griffing Brothers Nursery . In 1921 the Port Arthur Land Development Company took over and divided the land. The residential area of Pecan Grove was created, later renamed Groves in honor of Asa Groves, a representative of the Port Arthur Land Development Company.

A post office was set up in 1927 and a school followed in 1929; a public library was built a year later. The community quickly developed into a station on the Kansas City Southern Railway . In 1936 the Atlantic Refinery went into operation. In 1940 the community got a public water system and several civic organizations were established during the 1940s, including the local Lions Club , Chamber of Commerce and the Volunteer Fire Department. In the early 1950s, Groves had an estimated population of 1,300. In 1952, the townspeople voted 1,079 to 262 for Groves to be incorporated into the parish. The population grew rapidly, reaching 17,000 in the 1960 census and rising to 18,067 in 1970; at the beginning of the 20th century the population slowly declined. In 2000, Groves was the fourth largest city in Jefferson County, after Beaumont , Port Arthur and Nederland .
