Mary Peters (athlete)
Lady Mary Peters LG , DBE , CH (born July 6, 1939 in Halewood , Merseyside ) is a former British athlete . In 1972 she was an Olympic champion in the pentathlon .
In 1964 in Tokyo she took part in the Olympic Games for the first time and reached a 4th place . After a 9th place at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , Peters won the gold medal in the pentathlon at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , which was also a world record with 4801 points, ahead of the German favorite Heide Rosendahl (silver) and the GDR Sportswoman Burglinde Pollak .
Starting for Northern Ireland , she also won gold in the pentathlon at the British Commonwealth Games in 1974, ahead of Nigerian Modupe Oshikoya (silver) and Englishwoman Ann Wilson (bronze). It had already achieved a silver medal in 1966 and a gold medal in 1970.
Mary Peters received several awards and honors for her sporting successes and her charitable work. For example, in 1972, after her Olympic victory, she was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year , Sportsman of the Year in Great Britain.
In 2000 she was ennobled as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and from then on carried the name suffix Dame . In 2019 she was accepted into the Order of the Garter as Lady Companion and has since had the higher-ranking name affix Lady .
