Mary Philips (born January 23, 1901 in New London , Connecticut , † April 22, 1975 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American theater and film actress .

life and career

Mary Philips celebrated her greatest successes as a stage actress, between the late 1910s and 1940s she was seen in numerous productions on Broadway . Shortly after the introduction of talkies, she made her film debut in 1930 and was able to build a successful career here, although mostly supporting roles. The actress had her most important roles alongside Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes in the Hemingway film In Another Land (1932) and as the mother of the murderous Gene Tierney in the melodrama Mortal Sin (1945). In the 1950s, Philips was also seen sporadically in television roles. The actress made her last film Prinz Eisenherz in 1954 .

Mary Philips was married to actor Humphrey Bogart from 1928 to 1938 and to actor Kenneth MacKenna from 1938 until his death in 1962 . Despite the divorce, she remained friends with Bogart until his death and also attended his funeral. Mary Philips died of lung cancer in 1975 at the age of 74.
