from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary of York (born August 11, 1467 in Windsor Castle , Berkshire , † May 23, 1482 in the Palace of Placentia , Greenwich ) was the second daughter of King Edward IV of England and his wife Elizabeth Woodville .

Life

Mary of York was born on August 11, 1467, the second daughter of King Edward IV and his wife Elizabeth Woodville. She was baptized shortly after she was born, with the Archbishop of Canterbury , Thomas Bourchier , being one of her godparents. She had nine siblings ( Elizabeth of York , Cecily of York , Edward V of England, Margaret of York, Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York , Anne of York , George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Bedford, Catherine of York and Bridget of York ) and two half-brothers on her mother's side.

Mary's father Eduard probably planned to marry her to Johann , the King of Denmark, but nothing came of that. Instead, Johann married Christina von Sachsen .

In May 1480 Mary was accepted into the Order of the Garter with her sister Cecily . Her older sister Elizabeth had already been accepted in February of that year.

Mary died at the age of fourteen on May 23, 1482 in the Palace of Placentia in Greenwich and was buried in St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
