Masahiro Sugiura ( Japanese 杉 浦 昌 弘 , Sugiura Masahiro ; born September 25, 1936 in Okazaki ) is a Japanese molecular geneticist .

Life

Sugiura grew up in Kota and studied biology at Nagoya University from 1956 . From 1963 he conducted research at the University of Illinois and in 1965/66 at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He then worked as an assistant at the Universities of Hiroshima and Kyoto and from 1972 to 1982 laboratory manager at the National Institute of Genetics in Mishima . In 1982 he became a professor at Nagoya University, where he headed the Center for Genetic Research from 1986 until his retirement in 2000. From 2000 to 2005 he was dean and professor at Nagoya City University , from 2005 as professor emeritus. From 2010 he was University Professor at Nagoya University.

He was visiting professor in Munich , Strasbourg , at Fudan University in Shanghai (where he is an honorary professor ), at the University of California, San Diego and at the Institute for Immunology Basel .

plant

He succeeded in the first sequence analysis of a chloroplast genome. He sequenced these on several higher plants (especially with the tobacco plant as a model). The work on this lasted ten years, began in the late 1970s and continued until 1986 (publication of the nucleotide sequence ) and enabled new insights into the photosynthesis system based on the genome in which its building blocks are encoded. The work also anticipated and motivated the gene sequencing projects from the 1990s onwards, as it showed that overall sequencing was more efficient than individual searches for genes of interest. Then he and his group studied the molecular mechanisms of gene sequencing in chloroplasts.

Honors, memberships, editing

In 1991 he received the Gregor Mendel Medal . He is an honorary member of the Genetic Society of Japan, whose Kihara Prize he received in 1997. In 2004 he received the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists Award , in 2007 the Midori no Gakujutsushō ( Green Science Prize ) from the Japanese Prime Minister, in 2009 he was named a person with special cultural merits and in 2011 the Order of the Sacred Treasure , 1st class.

From 1985 to 1990 he served on the editorial board of Plant Molecular Biology and from 1984 to 2007 on that of Plant Science . From 1993 he was editor of DNA Research . From 1997 to 2004 he was one of the editors of the European Journal of Biochemistry .

From 1998 to 2004 he was President of the International Society of Endocytobiology .
