Maso di Banco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maso di Banco († 1348 ) was an Italian painter from the 14th century who worked in Florence and was influenced in his style by Giotto .

Beyond his narrow oeuvre , no more precise and verifiable information has survived to this day. However, there are a number of unambiguous ascriptions.

With all these frescoes , church pictures or church windows ascribed to him , the author never challenged the traditional pictorial tradition.

One example is the fresco of a particular court that adorns the tomb of a member of the Bardi banking family in a chapel of the Church of Santa Croce in Florence, where he asks for his soul in front of the judging Christ .

The decoration of that particular chapel illustrates particularly well the original form in which he internalized both the “narrative” style and the formal characteristics, which he had unmistakably absorbed through the lessons of Giotto and Ambrogio Lorenzetti .

Works by him can also be found in the Louvre , the Detroit Institute of Arts and Chantilly .
