Masque ( German : Mask ) is the third studio album by the American progressive rock band Kansas . It was released in September 1975 and remastered on CD in 2001 and a re-remastered vinyl version was released in 2014 .

The opening track It Takes a Woman's Love (To Make a Man) was remixed for the single release , but received no attention. This remix contained additional guest voices and segments that are very different from the album version.

Masque peaked at # 70 on the Billboard Albums Chart and sold about 250,000 copies in the months following its release in September 1975. In the wake of the great success of the two subsequent albums Leftoverture from 1976 and Point of Know Return from 1977, both of which went platinum, Masque and the two previous albums Kansas from 1974 and Song for America from 1975 also achieved new commercial interest. Masque was then awarded gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in December 1977 for more than 500,000 units sold .

Album design

The water from the cycle of four elements (Arcimboldo) by Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1566)

The front of the album is dominated by the portrait, made up of marine animals, of a man in profile looking to the left. The original is the painting Das Wasser from the cycle Four Elements by Giuseppe Arcimboldo from 1566 , which is kept in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
