Song for America is the second studio album by the American progressive rock band Kansas . It was released in February 1975 and re-released on CD in 2004, remastered .
The 10-minute title track was shortened to three minutes for the single release . In 2004 this piece was released as a bonus track on the newly mastered CD with improved sound and extended liner notes, rare photos and a live version of Down the Road
reception
In a retrospective review, AllMusic praised the " intense energy " of the shorter pieces on the album, noting that the longer songs require too much active listening to be appreciated. They concluded that the album was " ... a good (if not youthful) recording for a group in this genre ".
Steve Pettengill, who writes for the webzine Sea of Tranquility , describes the album as “ … a full symphonic rock album without the stadium-filling songs that will appear on later albums. With four long, complicated pieces and two pieces with a very American touch, Kansas shows with the second album in a very admirable way the duality of the band as progger and rocker. "
With around 250,000 units sold in the first few months after its release, the album reached number 57 on the Billboard album charts in February 1975 . The first three album releases from Kansas Kansas (1974), Song for America and Masque from 1975, benefited in retrospect from the platinum successes of the fourth album Leftoverture from 1976 and Point of Know Return from 1977, which reportedly rose to between 300,000 in January 1978 and sold 400,000 units, Song for America was awarded 500,000 units gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in June 1980 .
