style

Leftoverture is a varied, melodic progressive rock album with hard guitars, Hammond organ, symphonic arrangements and echoes of Southern Rock , Adult Orientated Rock and the mainstream . There are catchy and more complex compositions, energetic, bombastic, anthemic and calm passages; the singing varies between powerful and soulful.

Name and cover

The name, a portmanteau word from Leftover (English for remnant , leftovers ) and Overture ( overture ), was originally for the later so-called main piece of Magnum Opus provided. The band members liked it so much that they used it for the entire album. The cover was designed by Dave McMacken, who was also responsible for the graphic design of Frank Zappa's Over-Nite Sensation , AC / DC's Ballbreaker , Black Market from Weather Report and Reel Music from the Beatles .

reception

The album marked the breakthrough for Kansas, was awarded platinum several times and is considered a classic of American progressive rock. Gunnar Claussen from the Babyblauen Seiten criticizes Kansas “even only boiling with water and the mainstream squint here often enough results in pleasant but ordinary songs”. Horst Straske describes Leftoverture as an “absolute masterpiece” and sums it up: “In the course of their career, no other US band has understood how to incorporate the British tradition of progressive rock so perfectly into the typical American rock sound.” The music magazine eclipsed chose it on the 36th place of his list of the 150 most important prog albums. In June 2015, the renowned trade journal Rolling Stone voted the album 32nd of the 50 best progressive rock albums of all time .

Cover versions and other uses

The American thrash metal band Anthrax released an interpretation of Carry On Wayward Son that was very close to the original as a bonus track on their 2016 limited edition box set vinyl album For All Kings and in 2017 as a 12 " maxi single . The motif of the record cover also parodies the motif of the album Leftoverture .
