Massacre in Grade 13 ( Massacre at Central High ) is an American thriller- related youth film by Dutch director Rene Daalder from 1976. Daalder also wrote the screenplay for the film.

action

The film is set in the fictional American high school Central High , which is terrorized by a small violent group of 13th grade adolescents. The ruthless gang mainly oppresses the weak and the outsiders, but does not shy away from criminal activities such as psychological terror and assault .

The quiet and rather lonely David is new to college, where he soon meets with Mark, a childhood friend whom he once helped out of a predicament. Mark is the leader of the leading clique that has the school more or less firmly under control. He advises his comrade called in to refrain from “going it alone”, to subordinate himself and to adapt so that he goes “well”. David, who has a keen sense of justice, initially does not interfere in the humiliating actions of the group, but vehemently refuses membership because he does not like the group's methods. Bruce, who is considered particularly brutal and unscrupulous, feels increasingly provoked by the newcomer. However, since David is under the personal protection of Mark, this is initially inviolable for him.

This changes, however, when the increasingly rebellious David can thwart an impending rape and bring down three thugs, including Bruce. At least now, the physically well-constituted David rebels against the school tyrants. Meanwhile, his loyal friend Mark tries to prevent a possible violent confrontation, but when he catches David bathing naked with his attractive girlfriend Theresa, he turns away from him, disappointed. He becomes an opponent for a short time. The situation escalates. In a subsequent retaliatory measure, in which the informed Mark is not present, David's leg is badly injured, so that it later has to be amputated . Amazingly, David hides the true course of events, the public believes it was an accident.

After surviving the operation, the crippled David returns to college, where he takes revenge on his tormentors of old and thus frees the institution from the tyrants. His first victim is Bruce, who, like the other gang members Craig and Paul, falls into an insidious trap and suffers an excruciating "accidental death". Mark, the only survivor of the terrorist gang, is spared for the time being.

After the death of the brutal thugs, a power vacuum develops in the college. The isolated and humiliated victims of yore form a new elitist community and, in courting for David's favor, develop into cruel and even more ruthless oppressors. This newfound freedom leads so fatally to an anarchic order. Assassinations are almost commonplace now, and David becomes a judge of life and death - a mentally ill murderer. At the end of the film, he even plans to destroy the school in a huge explosion. Theresa and her friend Mark try to prevent this and appeal to David's mind. The disabled murderer, who secretly has a passion for Theresa, tries to prevent the detonation and possible health impairment of his loved one, but dies in an explosion while defusing the explosive charge. Other people are not hurt. Mark and Theresa survive the incident with a frightened calm and indifference.

Reviews

The lexicon of international film means that the film is designed as a “model case” to show “the behavior of misguided young people” . However, the film fails because of its claim and ultimately degenerates into a "bold sociological sandpit game with speculative effects."
