The Avasinis massacre was a war crime committed by the Waffen SS in Friuli , northeastern Italy, in the final stages of World War II .

procedure

The surrender of the German armies in Italy was signed by the Germans and the Allies on April 29, 1945 , the fighting should cease by May 2. On May 1st, a company of the 24th Waffen Mountain (Karstjäger) Division of the SS tried to move north from the Tagliamento Valley . They were shot at by partisans and involved in a firefight. Afterwards, on May 2, the SS men marched into the nearby village of Avasinis, which is not far from Trasaghis . There they broke into houses in search of suspected partisans and opened fire on civilians. Others were mistreated or seriously injured. The soldiers did not find any men capable of fighting and instead took around 40 women hostage. During the night of May 3, you were raped several times by SS soldiers and then shot in the neck . They murdered a total of 51 people, including five children between the ages of two and twelve; they left Avasinis on May 3rd. The SS Karstjäger Division surrendered to the US Americans in Carinthia a week later, on May 10th .

In August 1995 , at the request of the Documentation Center of the Association of Jewish Persons Persecuted by the Nazi Regime and the Mayor of Trasaghis, investigations into the judiciary in Germany began. 132 former members of the SS Karstjäger Division could be found, but they did not provide any information about the massacre, as they had probably agreed beforehand. In spring 2007 the proceedings were discontinued without success.

Today a memorial in Avasinis commemorates the massacre. Every year on May 2nd there is a commemorative march through the village.
