Peter Lieb
Peter Lieb (* 1974 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a German military historian .
Life
After completing his military service (W12) in 1993/94 with Fallschirmjägerbataillon 251 in Calw , Lieb studied economics in 1994/95 and from 1995 to 2001 modern history, the history of Eastern Europe and business administration at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the University of Pau and the University of Paris XII . After completing his Magister Artium (MA) in Munich, he was a visiting scholar at the German Historical Institute in Paris . From 2001 to 2005 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Contemporary History . In 2005 he started with Horst Möller at the LMU Munich with the dissertation Conventional War or Nazi Weltanschauungskrieg? Warfare and the fight against partisans in France 1943/44 as Dr. phil. PhD.
In it, Lieb traces the illegal German occupation policy and warfare in the western theater of war. He differentiates between the associations of the Wehrmacht and the SS . The latter fought an ideological struggle, while the Wehrmacht was guided by the idea of military expediency, but at the same time only rarely protested against this division of tasks. In 2006, Lieb was awarded the Werner Hahlweg Prize for Military History and Defense Sciences and the Prix Guillaume-Fichet / Octave-Simon for his work, which was carried out as part of the Wehrmacht in the Nazi Dictatorship project at the Institute for Contemporary History . The book version of Lieb's dissertation, published in 2007, received positive reviews. The modern historian Sönke Neitzel, for example, praised it as an “exemplary study”, while Roman Töppel from the Institute for Contemporary History spoke of a “standard work on the history of the war in the West 1943/44”. On the other hand, Armin Nolzen accused Lieb of having “only insufficiently penetrated his subject”. Lieb took "the perspective of the sources, so that he underestimated the criminal role of the Wehrmacht in France".
Lieb was Senior Lecturer in the Department of War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) from 2005 to 2015 and became a Research Fellow at the Center for European Security at the University of Salford in 2006 . He also taught a. a. at the University of Reading . In 2015 he became a research assistant in the Education Department, Fundamentals Department at the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr in Potsdam. Lieb does research on the subject of military history and is u. a. Member of the Military History Working Group , the Army Records Society and the German Committee for the History of the Second World War . In 2009 he was an expert witness in the trial against Josef Scheungraber at the Munich I Regional Court . He worked as a consultant for Arte , for example . He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War in Graz-Vienna-Raabs. Lieb published u. a. in Military History Journal , Journal of Strategic Studies and Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte .
Lieb has been a reserve officer in the Army since 2004 and currently holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the mountain troops . He does reserve services at the command staff of the armed forces in Bonn and as a trainer at the mountain and winter combat school (Geb / WiKpfS) in Mittenwald.
