The Massendorfer Schlucht is a narrow gorge near the town of Spalt in the Central Franconian district of Roth in Bavaria .
geography
The gorge is located in the Spalter hill country about 1200 meters northeast of Spalt and about 100 meters south of Massendorf , a district of Spalt.
There are other similar gorges nearby, such as the Schnittlinger Loch and the Zigeunerloch near Schnittling. To the east of the gorge is the ancient fortification of Alte Bürg.
description
The Massendorfer Gorge is about 300 meters long, 50 meters wide and up to 20 meters deep in the castle sandstone . Here a small stream, which rises at the upper end of the gorge, has dug itself deep into the castle sandstone. Some half-caves were also created by undercutting . In the gorge, the layers of the castle sandstone can be clearly seen on the basis of outcrops and rock fragments.
The Massendorfer Gorge is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 576R001. It is planned to put the entire gorge under protection and to designate it as a protected part of the landscape .
Development
The gorge is freely accessible all year round. There is a small parking lot south of Massendorf, from which it can be reached on foot in ten minutes. After periods of rain and melting snow, it is a little more difficult to access.
A number of signposted hiking trails lead through the gorge.
