Mateo Dineen

Mateo Dineen (born January 18, 1972 in San Mateo , California ; actually Matthew Dineen) is an American artist who lives and works in Berlin . He became famous for his comic-style paintings of hairy monsters in everyday situations.

Life and work

After high school , Mateo began studying mechanical engineering and then communications , both of which he dropped out without a degree . During a subsequent self-discovery trip through the United States of several months , he decided to dedicate his life to art instead of doing a possibly better-paying job that would not make him happy in the long run. He then studied illustration at the Art School in San Francisco and then began to earn a living as an artist during a five-month trip to Europe .

Back in the USA, he began to establish himself in the San Francisco art scene in 2001, where he also met his current wife in 2002. However, she wanted to return to her German homeland ; In 2004 the couple therefore decided to move to Berlin together.

Still completely unknown in Germany, the artist was initially only able to sell his pictures in Berlin for very little money at flea markets . However, the demand for his monster pictures and illustrations increased quickly and he began to market his works as art prints, calendars and printed on T-shirts over the Internet. Some of his works have also been published as puzzles by the Heye publishing group .

At the end of 2005, he and his Dutch artist friend Johan Potma opened the first joint monster gallery Zozoville in Berlin-Friedrichshain and the Skallywag Gallery in Schillerkiez . The Onkel Zozo Gallery branch on Heinrichplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg existed from 2011 to 2015.
