Matheus Bloem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matheus Bloem , also Mattewis, Matthys or Mathäus (born around 1616 probably in Amsterdam ; died after 1666) was a Dutch painter of still life who was active from 1637 to 1666. Some of his works have been preserved in museums.

Life

Bloem was the brother of the landscape painter Jan Blom. There is evidence that in 1655 he owed his hostess 1,200 guilders, an amount that had accumulated over five years. In return he gave her his collection of paintings worth 980 guilders in payment. On September 11, 1655, he sold two pictures from his collection. He mostly created still lifes with hunting scenes, especially with bird motifs. In Amsterdam he made a ceiling with an allegory of eagles, cranes, pelicans and pigeons for the then mayor Cornelis Jan Witsen . One of his surviving works, which shows a fox, can be seen in the Grunewald hunting lodge . His brother Jan Blom made him (here referred to as Matthys Bloem) a universal heir on March 10, 1658.
