Mathias Roten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathias Roten (born February 10, 1979 in Thun ; † March 7, 2008 at Hockenhorngrat in Lötschental ) was a Swiss paraglider pilot from Hünibach .

Mathias Roten started paragliding in 1995 and competed in his first competitions in 2000. After some success in cross country flying, he concentrated on paragliding acrobatics . Here he not only made a name for himself with his regular top placements at the most important competitions, but was also known for his willingness to experiment. In 2006, for example, at the Red Bull Vertigo, he created an absolute novelty with an acro program that he completed flying backwards.

In the 2005/2006 winter season, Roten discovered his passion for speed flying . He observed a group of parachutists who jumped out of the plane over a mountain and, equipped with skis, flew close to the mountain slope and repeatedly sought contact with the ground. Since he had been working as a test pilot for the paraglider manufacturer GIN-Gliders since 2004 , his suggestions led to the development of the GIN Nano 06, the first real speedglider.

Mathias Roten became one of the pioneers and trailblazers in this new sport within a very short time and regularly took top places in various speed flying competitions for the GIN competition team. Among his most outstanding achievements in speed flying were starts from the peaks of the Eiger , Mönch and Jungfrau (together with Ueli Kestenholz) in a single day.

Mathias Roten was known as a versatile athlete; He was a full-time test pilot for paragliders and speed flyers , tandem jump pilot and kitesurfing instructor.

Recently his interest in competitions has decreased and he has become increasingly involved in making films.

On March 7, 2008, he had a fatal accident on a test flight from the Hockenhorngrat in the Lötschental. According to initial findings, shortly after the start, Roten hit a speed flyer violently on rocky ground. The mountain rescue alarmed by third parties could only determine his death.
