Born Protestant, she then became non-denominational, finally a member of the Swedenborgian denomination . Her father had studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice in his youth , but remained an amateur. She attended private drawing lessons in Düsseldorf. Thanks to the support and advice of her son Hans, she became a portrait and landscape painter. She mostly signed her works with her maiden name.

Mathilde Sellenati was an unconventional, emancipated woman. In November 1856 she published the “Appeal to the PT Women Villach!” In Villach and tried to found a women's association.
