history
Due to its location on the Drau, but also due to mineral resources, the area of Kellerberg was settled early on. Around 200 BC Celts settled here and dug for lead and zinc ores. When the Romans from around 15 BC When Carinthia was occupied and incorporated into their empire, one of their army roads, which connected Villach ( Santicum ) with Tiburnia , which later became the provincial capital of Teurnia , passed Kellerberg. Under such favorable conditions, the settlement gained a certain importance over the centuries. In the 13th and 14th centuries, when there were only a few bridges over the Drau, there was a bridge near Kellerberg that connected the trade route from Santicum to Teurnia on the south side. Since the river was used as a waterway as early as the 13th century, both Kellerberg and Villach had trade relations with Friuli and Venice . Kellerberg - first mentioned in a document as Chellerberch in 1251 - received market jurisdiction relatively early and was a prosperous, flourishing market town in 1321.
The castle cellar mountain , mentioned in documents in 1251 for the first time, rushed the earthquake of 1348 and was not rebuilt. The new mansion, albeit not in the same location, was the Kellerberg Castle , which has been owned by the Rothauer family since 1894.
The market belonged to the Counts of Ortenburg from 1272 , with the death of the last Ortenburgers in 1418, rule passed to the Counts of Cilli . After this family died out in 1456, the county of Ortenburg came into the possession of the Habsburgs , who lent it to various fiefs.
In 1478 the Turks invaded Carinthia and devastated numerous places, including Kellerberg.
When political communities were formed in Carinthia in 1850, Kellerberg was initially an independent community, but was incorporated into the community of Paternion in 1865 . From 1899 on, Kellerberg was independent again until it was united with the community of Weißenstein in the course of the municipal structural reform in 1973.
