Matt Moore (actor)
Matt Moore (born January 8, 1888 in County Meath , Ireland as Matthew Moore , † January 20, 1960 in Hollywood , California ) was an Irish - American actor and silent film director .
life and career
Matt Moore and his family moved from Ireland to the United States in 1896. His other four siblings also went into show business: his older brothers Tom and Owen Moore achieved great celebrities in Hollywood during the silent film era. His younger siblings Mary Moore (1890–1919) and Joe Moore (1894–1926) were also film actors, but perhaps because of their untimely deaths they never achieved greater fame.
In total, Matt Moore was seen in nearly 220 films between 1912 and 1958. One of his first films was the influential silent film Traffic in Souls about prostitution, in which he played the male lead role of a police officer. Subsequently, his prominence slowly rose and he had an unspectacular but successful career in silent film. His most famous silent films today include the Jules Verne film adaptation 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916) and the horror film The Weird Three (1925) directed by Tod Browning . Matt Moore achieved great fame in particular through the film Fools in the Dark (1924) by Alfred Santell , in which he completed an impressive fight scene.
From 1913 to 1917 Moore also directed a total of 18 silent films, but in 1917 he returned completely to acting.
One of his last major roles was Moore in Coquette alongside Mary Pickford , who received an Oscar for the film . From the early 1930s he had to be content with smaller roles in most cases, but he made numerous film appearances until the late 1950s. Among other things, he played in the films Rain (1932) with Joan Crawford and The great love of my life (1957) with Cary Grant . In the 1950s he also took on occasional roles on US television. In 1960, the year of his death, the unmarried Matt Moore received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
