Matthew "Matt" Luke Penney (born February 11, 1998 in Chesterfield ) is an English football player who is under contract with Sheffield Wednesday .

Career

Penney came after his training at Sheffield Wednesday on the last day of the 2016/17 season for his loan club Bradford City for the first time in the third-rate EFL League One . The second half of 2017/18 the defender spent a league lower at Mansfield Town , but only made two appearances. After his return to Sheffield Penney completed 16 games in the championship , the second English division, and was table twelfth with the team at the end of the season.

On the fourth match day of the second division season 2019/20 , the Englishman was awarded to the German 2nd Bundesliga to FC St. Pauli ; the loan arrangement was valid until June 2020. There Penney met his former head coach in Sheffield, the Dutchman Jos Luhukay . At the beginning, the defender was often used, but from the beginning of November 2019 he missed six games due to a muscle injury and returned to team training on matchday 19. It was followed by eight more league games on the left defensive flank and in midfield, in which Penney was able to score a goal. With the hamburgers he finished the season in 14th place and was only able to secure the class with him on matchday 33. Then the Englishman returned to Sheffield.
