Matthew "Matt" Alvaro West (born October 1, 1993 in Seattle ) is an American volleyball player .

Career

West was initially interested in football. From 2006 to 2011 he played with the Space Needle Volleyball Foundation and discovered his sport. There he was named the best player of the year several times. As captain of the United States U19 national team, he reached the final of the 2010 NORCECA Championship in Guadalajara . The following year the team finished third in the U19 Pan American Cup in Mexicali . With the U21 national team, in which he was also the captain, the setter won the 2010 NORCECA championship in this age group. In 2011 he finished his education at Shorewood High School. In 2012 the juniors repeated their success at the NORCECA tournament in Colorado Springs . That same year, West began studying sports administration at Pepperdine University . There he played in the university team Pepperdine Waves. Every year the player was awarded by the MPSF-Liga and AVCA. In 2015 West was signed by the German Bundesliga club SWD Powervolleys Düren . Anton Brams , the club's new coach, already knew West from the national team. With the Düren, he reached the playoff quarter-finals ; In the CEV Cup , the SWD Powervolleys also made it to the quarter-finals. After the season West left the club.

Matt West comes from an athletic family. His mother Raquel West began with the Peruvian national team at the Olympic volleyball tournament in 1980 in Moscow in part. His father Mark played volleyball in college. Both parents work as volleyball coaches. Matt West also has a grandfather and several cousins ​​who played professional soccer in Peru.
