Life

Matteo Pertsch

Originally from Lake Constance, Matteo Pertsch came to Italy in 1790 , where he studied architecture in Rome and at the Academy of Fine Arts ( Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera ) in Milan . He later became a student of the architect Giuseppe Piermarini (1734-1808), who had built the Milanese opera house Teatro alla Scala . Like many of his contemporary colleagues, Pertsch was influenced by classicism, which represented a return to linear, classical-ancient forms and was characterized by temple-like column structures.

Opera house Teatro Verdi

In 1798 Pertsch was called to Trieste. At this time the city of Trieste was developing into a literary and artistic capital of Central Europe and an important economic and commercial center. Numerous merchants u. a. from Greece settled in the free port to go about their business. These businessmen had large assets that they invested in luxurious public buildings and private homes. Architects like Pertsch were hired for the magnificent buildings.

Under the supervision of his teacher and closely following the Milanese Scala, Pertsch first built the Trieste opera house Teatro Nuovo (from 1861 Teatro Communale , from 1901 Teatro Verdi ), which was completed in 1801. The Teatro Verdi is now one of the most visited opera houses in Italy.

Later, on behalf of the Greek merchant Demetrio Carciotti, Pertsch designed the building plans for Palazzo Carciotti, which was built between 1802 and 1805 in the newly created Borgo Teresiano district . Palazzo Carciotti was the seat of the port authority for many years.

Greek Orthodox Church of San Nicolò dei Greci

In 1818, Pertsch was finally commissioned by the Greek Orthodox community to complete their church of San Nicolò dei Greci . Pertsch gave the church, which was begun in 1782, an Ionic temple facade with two bell towers. He was supported in the construction project by his younger brother Johann Nepomuk Pertsch .

Pertsch became one of the most famous architects in Trieste and was called in as a consultant on numerous other building projects in the city. So he was u. a. involved in the design of the port and the construction of numerous wells to supply water to the population. He also held the chair of architecture at the Commercial and Maritime School ( IR Scuola di Commercio e di Nautica ) and taught architects such as Antonio Buttazzoni.

Pertsch died in 1834 at the age of 54. His son Nicolò Pertsch took over his works.
