Matthäus Schwarz (born February 19, 1497 in Augsburg ; † around 1574 there) was a merchant and art lover in Augsburg.

Life

Schwarz came from a carpenter's family who immigrated to Augsburg from Rettenbergen around 1400 and was the grandson of Ulrich Schwarz , who had been a municipal caretaker in Augsburg several times. After completing a commercial apprenticeship in Milan and Venice, where he acquired knowledge of accounting, he got a job with Jakob Fugger in 1516 . He became a confidante of the family and became chief accountant of the Fugger Company. In 1518 he wrote a commercial textbook with the book Musterbuchhaltung . Schwarz placed orders with various artists, including Narziss Renner .

Matthäus Schwarz's special love was his costumes, which is why he was nicknamed the `` dress fanatic '' . From 1520 onwards he had himself painted in full figure on various occasions for forty years. From Renner until 1536, then until 1560 by an artist from Christoph Amberger's workshop. These costume pictures, recorded in small books, record the exact occasion and circumstances, this biography begins with the birth. Two nude drawings capture the proportions of the body.
