Matthias Benedikt von Ketteler zu Harkotten (* 1751 ; † October 28, 1802 ) was a privy councilor and canon in Münster .

Life

Origin and family

Matthias Benedikt von Ketteler zu Harkotten came from the Westphalian noble family von Ketteler . He was the son of Goswin Lubbert von Ketteler zu Harkotten and his wife Bernhardine Dorothea von Korff called Schmising, daughter of Wilhelm Friedrich Anton von Korff zu Harkotten (* 1688, † 1727) and his wife Katharina Bernhardina Francisca von Westphalen . His sister Anna Franziska von Ketteler (1755–1835) was the abbess of the Freckenhorst monastery . His brother Clemens August was canon in Münster, as was his brother Wilhelm Arnold .

Career and work

In 1778 Matthias Benedict passed through the renunciation of his brother Clemens August in the possession of Münster Dompräbende . Eight years earlier he had been sworn up as a canon in Hildesheim . Here he renounced in 1777 in favor of his brother Wilhelm. In 1785 he was rehearsed here on the basis of papal commission . This decision was intended to strengthen Fürstenberg's position in the upcoming coadjutor election. In Osnabrück , Matthias Benedikt was accepted into the cathedral chapter in 1780. He was active as a canon in St. Mauritz in Münster from 1783. In 1790 he was appointed Domkellnereiassessor. In 1796 he represented the bishopric of Münster at the Lower Saxony district council in Hildesheim. Three years later he worked as a deputy to Elector Maximilian Franz in Frankfurt and was sent to Vienna in 1801 for diplomatic negotiations. He was considered one of the most politically gifted personalities in the Münsterland.
