Painting of the St. Briktius Church in Oekoven

Matthias Goebbels ( Joseph Matthias Hubertus Goebbels ; born March 19, 1836 in Baesweiler ; † September 6, 1911 in Aachen ) was chaplain at Sankt Maria im Kapitol in Cologne for 32 years and an important church painter in his day .

The church of the Rolduc Abbey ( Kerkrade , NL) was painted by Goebbels and is considered his masterpiece. He created paintings in the style of historicism and the Nazarenes for more than 20 churches in the Rhineland, but most of them are no longer preserved. Well-preserved examples of his painting can be found next to the abbey church in Rolduc in St. Briktius in Oekoven and in the former Marienborn monastery in Hoven (Zülpich) . Because his father came from Siersdorf (Aldenhoven) , it was an honor for him to have the wings on the late Gothic Antwerp reredos with pictures from the life of Jesusto paint. He painted himself and his three sisters in the pictures.

In recognition of his services, he was appointed canon of the Aachen Minster in 1892. Although he was entitled to a grave in Aachen, he preferred to be buried in his place of birth. His grave is in the Baesweiler cemetery . In spring 2007 the cemetery forecourt was named after him.
