Matthias Ockert

Matthias Ockert (born January 14, 1970 in Lake Constance ) is a German composer and guitarist .

Before studying music, he trained as a qualified architect at the Technical University of Berlin , which he completed in 1998. From 1995 to 2004 he studied jazz guitar with Attila Zoller and Bill Connors in New York . Since 1995 he has been a freelance music teacher at the KlangRäume music school for guitar and electric guitar in Karlsruhe. From 2001 to 2008 he studied composition at the Karlsruhe University of Music with Wolfgang Rihm . Ockert played in many musical ensembles in the USA and Europe. His works are performed at international festivals for instrumental and contemporary music.

Compositional style

In his works, Ockert combines elements from classical, jazz and rock. One feature is the electronic instrumentation with electric guitars, percussion instruments, synthesizers, etc.

Awards

  • 2004 1st prize at the “International Composition Competition for the Room of the Transparent Factory Dresden” with “diaphaneity for large ensemble in 7 groups and live electronics (2003/04)”
  • 2005 winner of the “32e Concours International de Musique et d'Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges (Degré I - RESIDENCE)” in France with stretto (2005) for 8-channel tape
  • 2009 Walter Fink Prize of the ZKM Karlsruhe 2009 for dance, electronic music and media

In 2008 Ockert received a scholarship from the Berlin Academy of the Arts .
