Matthias Stadelmann

Matthias Stadelmann (* 1967 ) is a German historian. He is an adjunct professor for modern and Eastern European history at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Live and act

Stadelmann studied history and literary history as well as musicology and theater studies at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1990 to 1997 ; during his studies he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He completed his studies in 1997 with his master's thesis on Revolutionary Russia in New Cultural History. Discursive formations and social identities . Subsequently, as a scholarship holder of the Volkswagen Foundation , he prepared for his doctorate supervised by Helmut Altrichter and Werner K. Blessing with numerous research stays in Moscow and St. Petersburg . He completed this in 2001 with his dissertation on Isaak Dunaevskij , which was awarded the Fritz Theodor Epstein Prize in 2002 by the Association of Eastern European Historians and in 2003 under the title Isaak Dunaevskij, Singer of the People. A career under Stalin was published.

From 2000 to 2010 he worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Eastern European History at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He received his habilitation there in 2010. His habilitation thesis on Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevic. The personal factor and the culture of change in the Russian autocracy was awarded the habilitation prize from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2010 to 2015 he taught as an academic senior counselor in Erlangen-Nuremberg, interrupted by replacing the chair for Central and Eastern European Contemporary History at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt from April 2013 to August 2014. In the 2015 summer semester, he was a Research Fellow at Imre Kertész College in Jena. In the 2015/16 winter semester and 2016 summer semester, he represented the chair for Eastern European History at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In October 2016, Stadelmann was appointed adjunct professor for Modern and Eastern European History by the President of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg ; in the meantime (2018) he represented the Erlangen Chair for Modern and Contemporary History.

In his works and his teaching, Stadelmann focuses on the history of the Romanovs since the early modern period and the history of politics in the Russian Empire . In the 20th century his focus is on the Russian Revolution and the cultural history of Stalinism . Stadelmann also deals with the history of Ukraine after the Second World War . Across epochs, music as an object of historical research is another focus of his research. Stadelmann has worked as an expert and consultant on various historical television documentaries.
