Maurice Chabas
Maurice Chabas (born September 21, 1862 in Nantes , † December 11, 1947 in Versailles ) was a French painter of symbolism .
Life
Maurice Chabas was born into the family of a businessman who was an amateur painter. He made it possible for his sons Maurice and Paul to study painting, while their older brother took over the family business. Maurice and Paul enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, where they studied with Tony Robert-Fleury (1837–1911), William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905), Gustave Boulanger (1824–1888) and Jules Lefebvre (1836–1911) studied.
Maurice Chabas made his debut in 1885 at the “Salon des artistes françaises”, where he presented his works until 1913. He was influenced there by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes . From 1890 to 1907 he exhibited at the "Salon des Amis des Beaux-Arts" in Nantes. Under the influence of Joséphin Péladan , he was involved in all the Rosicrucian salons from 1892 to 1897. In 1895 he showed his works at an exhibition in the Paris "Galerie des Arts Réunis".
From 1884 he also dealt with wall painting, u. a. in the town hall of Montrouge , in the Paris train station in Lyon and in the town hall of Vincennes .
In 1900 he moved to Villa Sainte-Foy No. 3 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , where his studio became an artist's salon, attended by the writers Maurice Maeterlinck , Leon Bloy , Lucien Lévy-Bruhl , Joséphin Péladan , René Guénon and Édouard Schuré , the astronomer Camille Flammarion and the medical scientist Charles Richet .
In 1915 in Belgium he met Gabrielle Storms-Castelot, born in Antwerp in 1888, mother of two boys, André Castelot (1911–2004), who became a historian, and Jacques Castelot (1914–1989), the future actor. The future painter Germaine Chanteaud-Chabas was born from this love affair.
After the outbreak of World War I he left Belgium and found refuge in England ; At the end of 1914 he returned to Paris and found an apartment at 42 rue de Lubeck.
In 1923 he was one of the founders of the " Salon des Tuileries ", u. a. with the painters Bessie Ellen Davidson and Charles Dufresne. He became a member of the Paris Fall Salon and exhibited at the Carnegie International Museum in Pittsburgh .
At the end of his life he painted almost exclusively religious motifs in an increasingly abstract form. He lived far from his family and died lonely in the Rue de la Paroisse in Versailles.
