Maurice Galbraith Cullen

Maurice Galbraith Cullen (born June 6, 1866 in St John’s , Newfoundland , † March 28, 1934 in Chambly , Québec ) was a Canadian impressionist painter .

At the age of four, Maurice Cullen moved with his family from Newfoundland to Montreal , where he grew up and went to school. From 1884 to 1887 he received art lessons at the local art school Conseil des arts et manufactures de Montréal and then studied sculpture with Louis-Philippe Hébert . In 1888 he went to Paris for further studies , where he studied at the Société nationale des beaux-arts with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jules-Élie Delaunay , among others . At the same time he attended the private institutes Académie Colarossi and Académie Julian . In 1895 he was accepted into the Société nationale des beaux-arts. In 1896 he returned to Montreal and concentrated on his main artistic theme, the representation of winter landscapes in the Impressionist style.

From 1900 to 1902 he traveled again to France and also visited Italy and North Africa. In 1907 he was elected as a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts , of which he had been an associate member since 1899. In his home country he exhibited with the Canadian Art Club , founded in 1907 , of which he was one of 20 members. His friends and colleagues at this time included James Wilson Morrice, William Brymner, Clarence Gagnon , Edmund Morris, A. Phimister Proctor, Horatio Walker , Homer Watson, Curtis Williamson and Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, who ran his studio in the same building as Cullen.

During World War I Maurice Cullen served as a war painter in Europe. After this time he returned to Canada again and changed his painting style in the 1920s to a more realistic representation of the details.
