Horatio Walker

Horatio Walker (born May 12, 1858 in Listowel , Ontario , † September 27, 1938 in Sainte-Pétronille , Quebec ) was a Canadian photographer and painter .

Life

Horatio Walker was the son of Thomas Walker and his wife Jeanne Maurice. Between 1873 and 1876, Walker trained with the photographers Notman and Fraser in Toronto . He later worked as a photographer in Rochester for a number of years. In the early 1880s, Walker toured Europe and learned about and was heavily influenced by the Barbizon French School . In the later years he spent his winters in New York City and the summer months on Île d'Orléans .

In 1883 he married Jeanette Pretty († 1938) in Toronto. Their marriage resulted in two children, Alice (1884-1891) and Horatio Jr. (1886-1910). His daughter died of complications from diphtheria and his son from tuberculosis . As a result of the tragedy, his wife Jeanette suffered a nervous breakdown and lived in a psychiatric hospital from 1914 until her death .
