Maurice Philippe

Maurice Philippe (born April 30, 1932 in Tooting , London , England , United Kingdom ; † June 5, 1989 in West Byfleet , Surrey , England, United Kingdom) was a British designer of racing cars and aircraft.

Philippe worked in the British aircraft industry in the 1950s and was involved in the design of the Comet 4 for de Havilland . He came to Lotus in the 1960s and, together with Colin Chapman, designed some of the most important Lotus formula racing cars. The Lotus 39 , the Lotus 43 and the Turbine Lotus 56 came from this community as well as the Lotus 49 and the Lotus 72 . After six years at Parnelli Jones - Philippe had left Lotus in 1972 - during which he was also responsible for building the Parnelli VPJ4 , he joined Tyrrell in 1978 .

At Tyrrell he became the new chief designer and built the three Tyrrell Formula 1 racing cars 008 , 009 and 010 . Philippe passed away in 1989, just before his last creation, the USAC - March 89CR, had its first test drive.
