Maurice Yvain (born February 12, 1891 in Paris , † July 27, 1965 in Suresnes ) was a French composer .

biography

Maurice Yvain was born into a family of musicians in 1891. From 1903 he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris . His teachers there were Louis Diémer and Xavier Leroux . He played the piano excellently and initially earned his living as a pianist with concerts in Monte Carlo and in the Parisian Cabaret Quat'z Arts.

After his military service during the First World War, he composed numerous chansons, including for Maurice Chevalier . One of his best-known chansons is Mon homme , which was made an evergreen by the celebrated Mistinguett in the Casino de Paris, and later also became a hit again by Barbra Streisand in the film Funny Girl ( My Man ).

It was only in the thirties that he began to compose for music theater and created frivolous Comédies musicales, of which he is considered a typical representative. His masterpiece is the operette-legére Ta Bouche , which replaced the antiquated style of the operettas Edmond Audrans and Robert Planquettes with economical equipment . His pieces are characterized by rhythmic conciseness, articulated typesetting and scenic fantasy. Later he also composed large set operettas based on more sentimental libretti, such as Chanson gitan , although one of Yvain's main works due to its musical quality, it failed to achieve lasting success.

In the thirties and forties he also composed the music for numerous films by prominent directors such as Anatole Litvak , Julien Duvivier and Henri-Georges Clouzot .

Yvain died in Suresnes near Paris in 1965.
