Maurizio Ferrante Gonzaga
Prince Maurizio Ferrante Gonzaga (born September 21, 1861 in Venice , † March 24, 1938 in Rome ) was an Italian lieutenant general and senator.
He came from the old Italian noble family Gonzaga and carried the title Marchese di Vescovato , Marchese del Vodice, Conte di Villanova e Cassolnovo in addition to the title of prince .
In the First World War Gonzaga was wounded several times. In the spring of 1917, after heavy fighting, he conquered Monte Vodice near Gorizia . After the war he received the title " Marchese del Vodice " for it.
Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy since 1899 , he became an officer in 1913, Commander in 1914 , Grand Commander in 1920 and in 1926 he was awarded the Grand Cross of this order. He became knight of the Order of Saints Mauritius and Lazarus in 1910, officer in 1915, Commander in 1919, Grand Commander in 1922 and received the Grand Cross of this order in 1933. He became Knight of the Military Order of Savoy in 1918 and received the gold cross for his service, two gold and two three silver medals for military bravery, three badges of honor for war wounded and the War Merit Cross .
His son Ferrante Vincenzo Gonzaga, Marchese del Vodice (1889-1943) also became a general. He is considered one of the first Italian generals to be killed by Germans in World War II. On September 8, 1943, the day the Cassibile armistice was announced , he was killed near Eboli .
