Maurizio Mario Moris (born October 13, 1860 in Paris , † September 19, 1944 in Rome ) was an Italian aviation pioneer, lieutenant general and senator .

Life

Moris was the son of an Italian businessman. He graduated from the Military Academy in Turin and then became an engineer and officer of genius troops . In 1894, according to the plans of Lieutenant Cesare del Fabbro, Moris built a free balloon at his own expense , with which the two officers ascended from the Prati di Castello (now Piazza Mazzini ) in Rome on June 11, 1894 and landed safely a few kilometers away. In the following years, Moris continued to build and use balloons, airships and then airplanes . In 1909, together with civilian authorities, he obtained a visit from the American aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright , who arrived at Centocelle airport near Rome in April that year and trained the first Italian pilots there. In the following year, Moris was appointed lieutenant colonel in command of the first battalion of the Italian air force , of which he is considered the father. In 1915 Moris was appointed Colonel Inspector General of Aviation in the War Ministry . Moris rose after the First World War to the lieutenant general and was appointed Senator 1939th He was also chairman of the Italian "Association of Aviation Pioneers".
