Mauro Caruana OSB KCB (born November 16, 1867 in Floriana as Luigi Carlo Giovanni Giuseppe Publio Caruana , † December 17, 1943 in Sliema ) was a Maltese Roman Catholic clergyman, bishop of Malta and archbishop . During his tenure, the First and Second World Wars and turbulent political conflicts in Malta fell.

Life

He entered the Benedictine order as a youth and in 1884 took the religious name Mauro. He made his profession in 1888 and received on March 14, 1891 by Hugh MacDonald , Bishop of Aberdeen, the ordination as a religious of the Benedictines.

On January 22, 1915 he was called to the Bishop of Malta and at the same time appointed Titular Archbishop of Rhodus , since Malta was united with the Archdiocese of Rhodes since 1797 . He was ordained bishop on February 10, 1915 by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val y Zulueta in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere , co- consecrators were Algernon Charles Stanley , Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Westminster , and John McIntyre , Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Birmingham . His episcopal motto was Fortis et ardens . On February 25, 1915 he took possession of his diocese.

On March 29, 1928, with the re-establishment of the Archdiocese of Rhodes, the personal union with the Diocese of Malta ended, but Mauro Caruana retained the archbishop's title ad personam .

Mauro Caruana died on December 17, 1943 at the age of 76 and, according to his wishes, was buried in the parish church of St Gregory in Sliema.
