Maurus Corker

Maurus Corker OSB (* 1636 in Yorkshire as James Corker , † December 22, 1715 in Paddington (London) ) was an English Benedictine , persecuted , friend of Oliver Plunketts and abbot of Lamspringe monastery .

Life

After joining the Benedictine order, James Corker took on the religious name Maurus. He experienced the Catholic repression in England and avoided the English exile in Lamspringe . There he made his religious vows on April 23, 1656 . In 1665 he was sent home as a missionary . He was one of Titus Oates ' accused of the papist conspiracy and was imprisoned in Newgate . He was acquitted of the charge of high treason on July 16, 1679, but sentenced to death as a Roman Catholic priest ordained abroad on January 17, 1680. Influential advocates obtained a stay of enforcement. During this time he is said to have converted a large number of Protestants to the Catholic faith.

While in custody he made friends with the archbishop of Armagh Oliver Plunkett, who was also arrested, and accompanied him in pastoral care until his martyrdom in Tyburn on June 15, 1681. A remarkable correspondence has been preserved between Corker and Plunkett. In 1683, Corker had Plunkett's remains exhumed and secretly brought to Lamspringe. After Jacob II ascended the throne in 1685, Corker was released from prison. He remained at the court as envoy of the elector and archbishop of Cologne . In 1687 he founded a small monastery in Clerkenwell , which was destroyed the following year during the Glorious Revolution .

Corker had to leave England again. In 1691 he received the title of Abbot of Cismar , in 1693 he became Abbot of Lamspringe. In 1696 he returned to England to continue his missionary work and to refute the "Papist Conspiracy" with journalism.
