Maurus Kalkum
Maurus Kalkum SOCist (born April 29, 1836 in Koblenz , † January 22, 1893 in Bregenz ) was a Cistercian and abbot of the Private Abbey Wettingen-Mehrerau .
Life
After graduating from the Abbey High School in Einsiedeln, Kalkum studied at the seminary in Chur and was ordained a priest there in 1860. In 1861 he entered the Cistercian - Abbey Wettingen-Mehrerau one in Bregenz, was there prefect (head teacher) of the Collegium Bernardi , Novice Master and Prior . Elected abbot in 1878 and preconized in 1879 , he had the monastery and school buildings enlarged and the monastery church redesigned, as well as setting up new businesses and workshops. The most important event of his tenure was the resettlement of the Marienstatt Abbey in the Westerwald , which was carried out in 1888 under the direction of the later Limburg bishop Dominikus Willi . In 1891 Kalkum became President of the Mehrerau Congregation . He died of pneumonia in 1893 and was buried in the crypt under the abbey church. Some of his sermons have appeared in print.
