location
The tomb is located near former Roman country houses ( villae rusticae ) and probably other Roman grave monuments.
description
The temple-like grave building has a rectangular floor plan. There is no base , as is otherwise common in Roman temples. In its place there is a low podium that ends with a simple profile. The front consists of a column position with four columns, a gable and a vestibule . A stone gable roof completes the building. The back with two corner pilasters and a frieze below the roof approach is designed more simply. The so-called cella becomes narrower towards the back.
Inscriptions
There were two inscriptions on the tomb. The first was engraved on the pediment:
- D (is) (?) M (anibus) (?)
- L (uci) Aemili Lupi
The second inscription was on the frieze of the architrave and consisted of bronze letters, which are now lost. The reconstruction of the inscription is based on the dowel holes for the letters:
- L (uci) Aemili Lupi an (norum) XIII
- L (ucius) Aem (ilius) Priscus pater et Dom (itia) Severa mat (er) f (ecerunt)
“Of Lucius Aemilius Lupus, 13 years old. His father Lucius Aemilius Priscus and his mother Domitia Severa had (the grave) built. "
