The Mavroneri ( Greek Μαυρονέρι , also Esonas Αίσωνας, ancient Greek Αἴσων Aisōn ) is the main river in the Pieria regional district of the Central Macedonia region of Greece . It flows through the Katerini plain and flows into the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea .

The Marvroneri absorbs the waters of the northern Olympus Mountains, the neighboring mountains Voulgara and Titaros to the west as well as the Pieria Mountains rising in the west of the plain and takes its name from the confluence of Itamos ( αταμος ), which flows from the Petra gorge into the Plain steps, and the Morniotikos ( Μορνώτικος ), which flows west of the village of Morna from the Pieria massif. Further tributaries are in the upper reaches the Briaziotikos ( Μπριαζιώτικος , after the village of Vrya ) and, south of Katerini, the Pelekas , which also flows to the left near Nea Efesos , which drains the north of the Katerini plain. The mouth is located about eight kilometers east of Nea Efesos on the border of the municipalities of Katerini and Dion-Olymbos .

On June 22nd, 168 BC, the Mavroneri took place . Chr. The Battle of Pydna between the Romans under the leadership of Lucius Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus and the Macedonians under their last king Perseus instead.
