Lake Mavrovosee ( Macedonian Мавровско Езеро Mavrovsko Ezero ; Albanian Liqen / -ii Mavrovës ) is a reservoir in western North Macedonia that was created in the middle of the 20th century . It belongs to the Opština Mavrovo i Rostuša and is located in the middle of the Mavrovo National Park in the Mavrovo region and in the Mavrovo Valley. The surrounding mountain ranges reach heights of up to 2000 meters above the Adriatic Sea and partly belong to the Šar Planina massif (north) and partly to that of the Bistra (south). This is only 20 kilometers west of the lake as the crow flies. With a surface area of 13.7 km², Lake Mavrovo is one of the country's larger lakes. At its deepest point, it is 48 meters deep.
Mavrovi Anovi , Leunovo , Nikiforovo and Mavrovo are among the shores of the lake. Around 340 permanent residents live in these villages together.
Inflows and outflows
The dam near the bank of Mavrovi Anovi dams the Mavrovska Reka at about 1230 m above sea level. A., which flows into the Radika after about 10 kilometers . This in turn flows into the Debarsee . Other larger tributaries of Lake Mavrovo are the Leunska Reka, the Petilepska Reka and the Kakačka Reka (called from north to south).
history
With the damming of the Mavrovska Reka, the large Mavrovo valley filled with water and thus formed the Mavrovo Lake, which is 10 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. In 1957 a hydropower plant was built in Vrutok northeast of the lake near Gostivar , which is operated through a five-kilometer-long canal with the lake about 600 meters higher. In 1959, more power plants were added in Raven - north of Vrutok - and in Vrben - near the dam. All three have a production capacity of 390 million kilowatt hours per year.
tourism
Lake Mavrovo, together with the surrounding mountain regions, is a popular holiday area. In summer bathing and hiking tourists come; in winter it is snow sports enthusiasts in the Zare Lazarevski ski area above the village of Mavrovo.
