Vrutok ( Macedonian Вруток ; Albanian  Vërtok / Vërtoku ) is a village in the Opština Gostivar in western Macedonia . The city of Gostivar is nine kilometers away. In Vrutok, the Vardar , the longest river in Macedonia, rises from the Šar Planina (alb. Sharri ) .

geography

Vrutok is a compact settlement on the southeast slope of the Šar Planina, the highest mountains in Macedonia. To the south-west and north-east, a plain about one kilometer wide and over six kilometers long opens up, which merges into the great Polog plain in the northeast at Gostivar . While the valley below Vrutok is used for agriculture, the mountain slopes to the side of the valley and the plain are forested.

The village of Vrutok is located at an altitude between 665 and 750  m. i. J. In the extreme south of the village is the source of the Vardars. The stream takes in another river below the village, which has its source in the southwest near Orkjuše . The Vardar then crosses the valley and continues to flow to the northwest, where it enters the Polog plain.

Neighboring villages are Pečkovo , Raven and Rečane turning clockwise from the north .

The climate in Vrutok, as in most of Macedonia, is continental . This means that it can get very warm and dry in summer and very cold and rainy in winter. Autumn and spring are less pronounced and shorter than in Central Europe. It is not uncommon for forest fires to break out in the forests around the village , mostly caused by the extreme summer heat.

population

The village of Vrutok has 1127 inhabitants according to the last census in Macedonia in 2002. In addition to Albanians, there are Macedonians , Turks , Torbeschen and Roma . Albanians, Turks, Torbeschen and some of the Roma count themselves to Islam with Sunni characteristics. The Macedonians and another part of the Roma are Orthodox . The Albanians speak a Gegic dialect of Albanian while the Macedonians speak the Macedonian Upper Polog dialect .

history

The church of Archangel Michael with an adjoining cemetery is at the Vardar spring . A mosque with a minaret is located further north on the central village square, where many streets cross.

economy

Agriculture and animal husbandry used to play a far more important role. In addition to the cultivation of various types of grain and vegetables, fruits, grapevines and chestnuts , the manufacture of tobacco and the extraction of wood in the nearby forests were the main occupations of the inhabitants. The keeping of cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs - the latter only with the Macedonians - played an important role in economic life. Many of them sold their surplus goods in the markets in the nearby towns of Gostivar, Tetovo , Kičevo or Debar . The craft was also very common. The processing of wood, sheep's wool and animal skin played an important role. The production of cheese , especially brine cheese , and beekeeping were other industries.

The fish restaurant Burimi (Alb. For source) is known in Macedonia for its specialties.

Today these traditional forms of economy have lost much of their importance. With the transformation of the Macedonian economy from a real socialist central administration economy to an economically liberal free market economy during the 1990s, i.e. after the collapse of Yugoslavia , the way of life in Vrutok changed abruptly, as in all of Macedonia. For many, agriculture and animal husbandry hardly bring in any more income. That is why people able to work have looked for alternatives and found them, for example, in trade, small industry, gastronomy and retail. However, a large proportion are unemployed and emigration is often seen as another solution. Destinations and countries are and were the larger cities of Macedonia and the former Yugoslavia as well as countries in Western , Central and Northern Europe . But many have also emigrated to North America and Australia . However, youth unemployment remains a major problem. Although many go to university in Tetovo, neighboring Kosovo or Albania , they usually have no prospects afterwards.

Another branch of the economy is tourism. Since the Vardar rises in Vrutok, operators of gastronomic facilities have taken advantage of this advantage. Restaurants and individual hotels have sprung up near the source but also in other parts of the village. The fish restaurant by the source is known and loved across the country for its freshly prepared fish specialties.

On the other side of the valley there are several mining areas for gravel , sand and stone on the slopes . In Vrutok, as in the neighboring villages of Vrben and Raven, a hydropower plant with a total output of 245 megawatts is operated with the water from Lake Mavrovo in the southwest .

traffic

The Vrutok side valley is an important passage for traffic between the capital Skopje and the south-west of the country and Albania. The national road M4 leads on the other side of the valley along the mountainside and connects the capital with Ohrid in southwest Macedonia and the border with Albania at Qafë Thana (maz. Čafasan Чафасан). The Skopje-Kičevo railway of the Macedonian Railways also runs through the valley.
