history

In 1946 a special purpose association was established, which on May 25, 1946 applied to the Bavarian Ministry for Education and Culture for approval to set up a six-class high school in Grafing. From the school year 1947 onwards, 168 boys attended the secondary school for boys in Markt - Grafing , although girls were also permitted.

A monthly school fee of 20 Reichsmarks was set for the children of the surrounding communities. Teaching was initially held in a house next to a poultry farm on Wasserburger Strasse. There were five classrooms and a storage room for the ten teachers. As was usual in post-war Germany, teaching the lessons turned out to be extremely difficult in completely overcrowded classrooms.

In 1953, in order to counteract the financial shortage at the secondary school, a sponsorship association was founded to provide financial support for the secondary school. This association is still active today as the "Schulverein am Gymnasium Grafing eV".

In 1956, what was then the secondary school temporarily moved to Rotter Strasse 8, where the primary school was previously located. In 1962, the new building of the current site at Jahnstraße 17 was completed and the secondary school moved into the current school building (known as the old building ). In 1965 the name was changed to Grafing grammar school .

In the following years the number of students increased, so that in 1971 another part of the building (so-called building construction) had to be added. The number of pupils rose so much in the 1970s that shift teaching had to be introduced. With the opening of further parts of the building in the following years, a collapse could be counteracted. Today the school has six parts of the building ( old building, building, long building, new building, pavilion and gym), which were built one after the other and renovated several times. In the second half of the 2000s , the school playground underwent a partial refresh, which was completed in 2015.

After the opening of the Kirchseeon grammar school in 2008, the number of pupils decreased again from around 1800.

Since summer 2018, the oldest part of the building, the so-called old building, which has been rebuilt several times since 1967 (library in the atrium, chemistry and physics rooms, directorate, cafeteria), has been completely renovated. Around 8 million euros have been budgeted for this. Among other things, all physics and chemistry rooms, the electrical and fire alarm center were renovated. The roof was also renovated and prepared for the construction of a photovoltaic system. The renovations were completed in November 2019.

The Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture decided that, in accordance with the wishes of the school community, the grammar school may be named Max Mannheimer -Gymnasium Grafing from January 2020 , named after the Holocaust survivor who was a frequent guest at the grammar school Grafing. Together with the completion of the partial renovation of the school building , the renaming was celebrated on January 17, 2020 with prominent speakers, including Charlotte Knobloch .

Language sequence

The school offers both a scientific-technological and a language course. A special feature of the language selection is that there are four foreign languages to choose from: Latin, English, French and Italian. A maximum of three of these four foreign languages can be taken at the same time and at least two must be taken. English is actually a compulsory first foreign language. Only Latin or French can be chosen as the second foreign language. From the eighth grade onwards, French or Italian can also be selected. From the tenth grade onwards, either the first English or the second language (Latin or French) can be exchanged for Italian (starting late). However, you are obliged to take Italian in the upper school as well.

Furnishing

The high school has three chemistry halls, four biology halls, three physics halls, two IT rooms, three music rooms, three art rooms, three sports halls, a physics practice room and a large multi-purpose room. The high school also has a cafeteria and a library with over 25,000 works. Since the 2013/14 school year, every regularly used classroom has been fully equipped with media equipment, including a computer, VHS / DVD player and video projector .

The school has had an "Open All-Day School" (OGTS) since 2009, which is financially funded by the Ministry of Education and funded by the "Afternoon Care Association".

Transport links

Due to the difficult situation that large parts of the southern district are not connected to local public transport via railways, a comprehensive district school bus system was created, in which the Grafing grammar school is integrated in addition to the Grafing elementary and middle school, the Ebersberg secondary school and the Ebersberg middle school. In addition to school buses and non-motorized private transport, students from Ebersberg , Steinhöring and other communities take the Munich S-Bahn to the Grafing Stadt stop . A similar system also exists in the Steinhöring community.

Exchange schools

For pupils who are learning French as a 1st or 2nd foreign language, an exchange trip to Saint Marcellin and Dijon or Moulins is currently (as of 2015) in the 8th grade; there is an exchange trip  to the 9th grade for all modern-language students Exchange project with  Yssingeaux .

Pupils in the 8th or 9th grade can also apply to the Bayerischer Jugendring for an individual student exchange as part of the Brigitte Sauzay program of the Franco-German Youth Office (DFJW). It is a two-month school attendance program with mutual family accommodation. The French schools and host families are the responsibility of the Nancy-Metz and Nice Academies.

Influence of politics

On December 19, 2011, a written bomb threat was sent to the directorate, which resulted in the evacuation of the school. Before that, after National Socialist graffiti, a spontaneous rally was held by students and teaching staff at the school.

From August 2013 to June 2016, the high school, like many other schools in the district , accommodated asylum seekers . The difference to other schools is that the asylum seekers were not housed in gyms, but in empty containers (called pavilions ) that had previously been used as classrooms. This step had caused a sensation and recognition across the district, but also criticism because of the cold in winter and difficult sanitary conditions. Due to the decreasing number of refugees after the closure of the Balkan route , the situation for all cities and municipalities in the district of Ebersberg relaxed in the first half of 2016 , which is why it was decided that the accommodation should be vacated in May 2016 and then converted into classrooms for refugees of vocational school age. The residents protested several times against the eviction. The accommodation was finally vacated on June 16, 2016. In the meantime, the rooms have been used again as classrooms for the grammar school.

Others

  • The Grafing grammar school was the home base of the movement arts group “Movimento”, led by Stefan Eberherr, which emerged from the elective movement arts course and was fed and has performed and received recognition across Europe. Until recently, around 350 students had taken part in the project, which was more than a quarter of the total number of students. "Movimento" has been a department of TSV Grafing since 2018.
  • Wall artwork after restoration
The Grafing grammar school has had two original components of the former Berlin Wall, each approx. One meter wide, for several years (from a donation) . For several years, the parts had been put down by chance and in 2012 were placed in a central location as an information point and supplemented by a metal work of art in the playground.
