The Franz-Marc-Gymnasium ( FMG for short ) is a grammar school in Markt Schwaben , which was founded in 1973 as the Markt Schwaben grammar school .

In 1989 the school was renamed Franz-Marc-Gymnasium after the painter Franz Marc at the instigation of the school director at the time, Karl Rester . With this choice of name, both the hope for an independent and unmistakable profile and the desire to make the idea of comprehensive scientific, artistic and character education clear as the task of the grammar school should be expressed.

At the beginning of 2006, a new cafeteria and another floor were built at the school.

Catchment area

The school is one of those Bavarian grammar schools that were set up as part of an expansion of the grammar school education system since the mid-1960s. Immediately after it was founded, the number of students rose rapidly, so that after initial accommodation in various schools, the completion of the main wing in 1976 was eagerly awaited. The spatial offer was later considerably expanded by the construction of an extension and a gym.

In 1982 another grammar school was founded in the municipality of Kirchheim-Heimstetten, which considerably relieved the Franz Marc grammar school. The number of registrations was halved, the total number of students fell from 1,300 to 820. The number of new registrations has risen continuously since 1985 and has leveled off at around 150 students from 1990 onwards. In January 2017 the number of students was 1193. The Franz-Marc-Gymnasium is by far the largest school in Markt Schwaben.

The school has a catchment area that extends far beyond the boundaries of Markt Schwaben. In the 2016/2017 school year, 85.2% of the students came from the Ebersberg district , 13.7% from the Erding district , 0.6% from the Munich district and 0.5% from the state capital of Munich .

Lessons offered

At the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium, the canon of compulsory subjects that is common in Bavarian high schools is taught. Modifications result from the division into a modern language and a mathematical-scientific branch (or linguistic and scientific-technological branch in an eight-year high school) as well as different language sequences.

Pupils attending the modern language (linguistic) branch study three foreign languages (in the order Latin - English - French or English - Latin - French). Those pupils who attend the mathematical-scientific (scientific-technological) branch learn only two foreign languages (in the order English – Latin, English – French or Latin – English) and instead place a significantly stronger focus on the natural science subjects. In addition, since the 2012/2013 school year, Spanish has been offered as a late-beginning foreign language from the 10th grade.

Additional offers

Franz-Marc-Gymnasium

In addition to the compulsory program, the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium has been able to offer an extensive program of elective subjects and study groups in recent years.

The focus in this area was and is, among other things, music (for example choir , orchestra , instrumental lessons, as well as the school band "MarCant"), theater (theater group of lower, middle and upper grades), sport (for example acrobatics , gymnastics and dance , Girls' football , climbing , volleyball ), environmental protection (e.g. geoecology / weather station, school garden), psychology (e.g. learning training in 5th grade, mediation, addiction prevention), media (e.g. project-oriented work with new media, film and video , photography ) , political education (working group on politics and contemporary history), mathematical and scientific education (plus courses in mathematics, research in a team) and many more.

Due to the shortening of the intensification hours in the G8, numerous remedial courses (especially in languages) have been offered since the 2008/2009 school year.

Other groups whose intentions are not directly anchored in compulsory or elective lessons (for example a chess group, a “one world” group) meet regularly. In addition, the FMG has its own school medical service (SSD for short), in which pupils from the 8th grade can get involved.

The school also has its own school newspaper called Phoenix , which has been publishing two issues per school year for a few years now.

The Franz-Marc-Gymnasium has a climate station. In this context, the school was included in the Globe-Germany program in which selected schools around the world work together for the purpose of monitoring, collecting and comparing climate data.

The open house at the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium

The Initiative Offenes Haus - Offenes Herz is a multiple award-winning local volunteer initiative that promotes the integration and promotion of foreign-language students. At the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium, work with the initiative has been offered as a (profile) elective or seminar since the 2007/2008 school year. The open house at the grammar school is made up of around 80 middle and upper school students. They offer reading sponsorships at the elementary school, homework supervision at the middle school and supervision work in the transitional class, as well as in-school tutoring courses at the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium. The Open House is a profile for the school, especially against the background that the FMG is a “school without racism”.

Open all-day school

An open all-day school has been set up at the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium since September 2009, for which 185 students from grades 5–10 were registered in the 2016/17 school year. The cooperation partner for the implementation of the open all-day school is the Diakonisches Werk Rosenheim. The supervision of the students by 4 leaders and 23 supervisors takes place between 12:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the focus is on lunch, study times, attending elective and intensification classes and supervised free time.

Others

In recent years, the school has set an additional historical-political accent through the research work of students on "Forgotten Resistance in Markt Schwaben and the Surrounding Area". In collaboration with the Weisse Rose Foundation in Munich, several exhibitions have already been designed in which students presented new knowledge about the Nazi era in their immediate surroundings. These exhibitions found and continue to attract a high level of attention beyond the school's catchment area. In 2008, the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium was also awarded the honorary title of a school without racism - school with courage .
