The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI CPfS) is a non-university research facility sponsored by the Max Planck Society (MPG) and is based in Dresden . The institute primarily conducts basic research in the field of natural sciences in the fields of physics and chemistry .

history

In order to contribute to a unified research landscape in unified Germany and to create a forum for cooperation between the two disciplines of chemistry and physics of solids, the Senate of the Max Planck Society decided to found a new institute in Dresden in March 1995.

After completion of the planning phase, construction work began in 1997 on the new institute building, which was completed and occupied in mid-2000 (8,000 m² of usable space, total costs of 40 million euros). The official inauguration of the institute building took place on November 2, 2001. At present, around 210 employees work at the institute, including 80 scientists and over 30 doctoral students.

research

The institute's scientists devote themselves to the experimental research of intermetallic phases with novel structural, chemical and physical properties. The focus of research is on the production and investigation of intermetallic compounds , which are caused by unusual shapes and the like. a. are characterized by magnetism, superconductivity and metal-semiconductor transitions. The joint research direction of the institute aims at intermetallic compounds with a view to synthesis , phase equilibria , structural chemistry and chemical bonding as well as their chemical and physical properties. Close cooperation between the two disciplines of chemistry and physics is of the utmost importance for this scientific objective.

The MPI CPfS is divided into four research areas, two each from chemistry and physics, six experimental competence groups and one theoretical competence group. The directors of the research areas are Liu Hao Tjeng (physics of correlated matter), Juri Grin (chemical metallurgy), Claudia Felser (inorganic chemistry) and Andrew Mackenzie (solid state physics).

Together with the Natural Science and Technology University of Pohang (POSTECH), the institute operates the Max Planck-POSTECH / Hsinchu Center for Complex Phase Materials in order to design physical models for the correlation behavior of electrons in complex materials and phase transitions . The Max Planck Institute for Solid State Physics (MPI FKF) and various research institutions in Taiwan are also involved .

International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS)

The MPI CPfS is involved in two International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS). An IMPRS is an international program for the promotion of doctoral students, which is carried out in cooperation with one or more universities.

The International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials is organized under the direction of the MPI CPfS together with the University of St. Andrews (Fife, Scotland) and the Technical University of Dresden . The spokesman for the IMPRS is Andrew Mackenzie.

Furthermore, the MPI CPfS is involved in the International Max Planck Research School for Dynamical Processes in Atoms, Molecules and Solids together with the neighboring Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPI PKS) and the Technical University of Dresden . This IMPRS is managed by MPI PKS, the spokesperson is Jan-Michael Rost .
