Max G. Bollag

Max G. Bollag (born December 6, 1913 in Zurich ; † September 13, 2005 there ) was a Swiss gallery owner . Mainly active in Zurich, he was best known for his Pablo Picasso exhibitions.

Life

Max G. Bollag comes from a long-established Jewish family and grew up in Zurich. In 1936 Bollag went to London and bought the first paintings for £ 60 . These were sold quickly and so he traveled to London again in 1937 to buy some more paintings. He opened a Modern Art Center gallery on Zurich's Rämistrasse and shortly afterwards in the Zunfthaus zur Meisen . In 1940 he moved his gallery to Lausanne. Here he showed pictures of u. a. Cuno Amiet , Johann Heinrich Füssli , Alberto Giacometti and also early works by Pablo Picasso . In addition to the exhibitions, he organized two-day auctions.

In 1946, Bollag opened his gallery at Storchengasse 9 in Zurich. Works by Paul Klee , Wassili Kandinsky and Picasso were shown here. Auctions could at that time only twice a year with a peddler - Patent be performed. First the auctions took place in the Zunfthaus, then in the Kongresshaus.

In 1949 Bollag married Susi Aeppli, the daughter of Ernst Aeppli and Gertrud Zschokke. Four children emerged from this connection.

In 1950 he founded the Swiss Society of Friends of Art Auctions, which gave the opportunity to hold auctions in the gallery in a closed society. The membership fee was 5 francs a year. Works of art were auctioned every two months.

In 1963, after several stops, the gallery space was on Werdmühlestrasse. In 1998, at the age of 85, Bollag retired from work. He died on September 13, 2005.
