Anne Cuneo (born September 6, 1936 in Paris ; † February 11, 2015 ) was a Swiss writer and director . She lived in Zurich .

Life

Anne Cuneo was born to Italian parents in Paris in 1936. After the outbreak of World War II, the family left France and moved to Milan.

After her father died in 1945, she spent her childhood in various orphanages in Italy . In 1950 she came to French-speaking Lausanne . She then spent some time in London , where she learned English almost like her third mother tongue . Back in Lausanne, she studied English, Italian and history at the university . After completing her studies in 1964, she gave language lessons. From 1973 she worked in various functions on Swiss television.

She published her first work in 1967 (Gravé au Diamant) . In Eine Messerspitze blau (1979) and in the two-volume portrait of the author as an ordinary woman (1980 and 1982) she dealt autobiographically with her breast cancer and her immigration to Switzerland.

The detective novel Herz aus Eisen , published in 1998, was the first case for the private investigator Maria Machiavelli. This was followed by Vergessen ist Gold (1999), Lisa's smile (2000) and Hotel Herzschlag (2004). Her last novel was published in 2013 under the title Already the forest goes up in flames . It is a historical novel based on real events at the Schauspielhaus Zürich , where many Jewish actors and actresses found refuge during the Third Reich.

In addition to her literary and journalistic activities, she worked for theater and film. Numerous essays , such as Le Piano du pauvre (1975), La Machine Fantaisie (1976), Le Monde des forains (1985) and Benno Besson et Hamlet (1987), testify to her fascination for these arts . In the novels about Francis Tregian (1993), Emilia Bassano ( Shakespeare's Beloved aka Dark Lady ) (1996) and John Florio (2011), she described the lives of three people in England during the Elizabethan Age . She wrote another historical novel about Antoine Augereau (2004).

She made her first documentary in 1980 together with Lucienne Lanaz and Erich Liebi, in which the role of women in the Swiss Film Weekly (1940–1975) is the theme. As a director she made more than ten other documentaries, several of them about Swiss personalities of the 20th century such as Friedrich Glauser (1995), Adrian Frutiger (1999), Anne-Marie Blanc (2001), Ettore Cella (2002), Ferdy Kübler (2003 ) and Max G. Bollag (2007).
