Max Kerner (historian)

Maximilian Kerner (born December 1, 1940 ) is a German historian .

Life

Kerner studied history and Latin at the University of Cologne . In 1969 he was at RWTH Aachen University with a thesis decree of Bishop Burchard of Worms to Dr. phil. PhD . In 1974 he completed his habilitation in Aachen at the philosophical faculty with the script Johannes von Salisbury and the logical structure of his Policraticus .

1980 Kerner was the Chair of Medieval and Modern History at the RWTH Aachen University appointed ; From 2002 to 2008 he held the chair for Middle History and was managing director of the Historical Institute until 2007. He was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy from 1982 to 1984 and Vice Rector of RWTH Aachen University from 1986 to 1991. In 2006 he was elected chairman of the RWTH Aachen Senate for the third time in a row.

In 2008, Kerner founded the interdisciplinary discussion and course series Project "Leonardo" at RWTH Aachen University in cooperation with the Senate. The seminars and lectures open to the university are intended to address “global challenges” and in this way to bring RWTH lecturers into discussion with students about important social issues.

Although Kerner officially retired from university in 2009, he is still actively involved in teaching at the university as Senior Advisor of the "Leonardo" project.

Kerner's main research areas are the history of church law, Charlemagne , the history of the political ideas of the high Middle Ages and the history of prophetic literature. Kerner has published numerous scientific papers and papers. From 1990 to 2007 he was co-editor of the Aachen Studies for Technology and Society .

Until 1999 he was chairman of the board of directors of the external institute of RWTH Aachen University and in 2000 he was organizational director of the 43rd German Historians' Day in Aachen. From 1990 to 2007 he was the spokesman for the interdisciplinary "Forum Technology and Society" at RWTH.
