Max Schefold

Max Schefold (born October 1, 1896 in Ulm , † January 1, 1997 in Stuttgart ) was a German art historian .

Max Schefold, son of an officer, studied art history in Munich and Erlangen after participating in the First World War . In 1924 he received his doctorate in Erlangen with a thesis on Gothic devotional images. He then worked at the Ulm Museum and then at the Württemberg State Trade Museum in Stuttgart. From 1930 he worked at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart , most recently as chief curator until his retirement on September 1, 1962.

His life's work was the history of topographical views, especially of southern Germany. His indexes of local views of Württemberg and Baden are still important reference works today.

In 1975 Schefold received the Schiller Prize from the city of Marbach am Neckar and the honorary title of professor from the state of Baden-Württemberg .
